Robert Goulet, 73, Oct. 30: The quintessential Lancelot, from the Broadway production of "Camelot," Goulet had a big stage presence and a creamy vocal style. He performed in many musicals, including "Carousel" and the underrated animated gem "Gay Purr-ee." In later years he appeared in "Beetlejuice" and "Scrooged," and guested as himself on "The Simpsons." Will Ferrell also sent him up in several skits on "Saturday Night Live," including one featuring the "Robert Goulet cellphone" -- a phone encased in a replica of the star's head. (Walter McBride/Retna Ltd.)

Norman Mailer, 84, Nov. 10: The American literary titan shot to stardom with his first novel, 1948's "The Naked and the Dead," which Modern Library has dubbed "one of the hundred best works in the English language." Mailer the talent and Mailer the person were both larger than life, as the author created screenplays, experimental fiction and thunderous nonfiction, including "The Executioner's Song," which won Mailer one of his two Pulitzers. Charles McGrath of The New York Times summed him up: "Mr. Mailer belonged to the old literary school that regarded novel writing as a heroic enterprise undertaken by heroic characters with egos to match." (Camera Press/Retna Ltd.)

Ira Levin, 78, Nov. 12: The author of such creepfest horror novels as "Rosemary's Baby" and "The Stepford Wives" was a lifelong New Yorker and got his start as a TV writer. His first book, 1953's "A Kiss Before Dying," became a huge hit, and Levin enjoyed enormous success in his long career. He also wrote "The Boys From Brazil" and the long-running theatrical hit "Deathtrap." (Camera Press/Retna Ltd.)

Dick Wilson, 91, Nov. 19: The longtime character actor was best known as Mr. Whipple, the uptight grocery manager who kept telling shoppers, "Don't squeeze the Charmin" toilet paper. Incredibly, Wilson filmed more than 500 Charmin commercials and became an icon for the brand, though he'd worked in films and TV for decades. Acting in commercials, he once said, "is the hardest thing to do in the entire acting realm. You've got 24 seconds to introduce yourself, introduce the product, say something nice about it and get off gracefully." (Reuters)

Kevin DuBrow, 52, Nov. 25: Lead singer for '80s band Quiet Riot, Kevin DuBrow's rowdy, in-your-face voice helped make the band's hit "Cum on Feel the Noize" a worldwide smash, paving the way for similar acts such as Ratt and Twisted Sister. The popularity of "Noize" shot their album "Metal Health" to No. 1 on the Billboard Charts, making it the first album by a heavy metal band to hit the top spot. Even today, baseball games just aren't the same without hearing "We'll get wild, wild, wild!" coming from the speakers. (Janet Macoska/Retna Ltd.)
